 Boadilla pond / Fernando Jubete

The LIFE project will improve the water supply and quality in 14 ponds. Thirty-three wetlands will be reforested, which will involve planting 84,400 trees and shrubs along a total of 6.5 miles (10,500 linear meters).

In 15 ponds, periodic helophytic vegetation management work will be done, which will improve or create favourable habitats for endangered species like the bittern (Botaurus stellaris) or aquatic warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola).

Surveillance work will reduce threats to the Canal de Castilla, such as fires, poaching, dumping building debris in ponds, illegal extraction of water or bothering the birds during the nesting period.

Awareness-raising actions will help to stimulate the interest of young people in nature conservation and help local communities to understand the value of the wetlands and fluvial groves of the Canal de Castilla.

Finally, the scientific monitoring work will verify the success or errors that are committed while implementing the project and will increase knowledge of the species present in this natural area.
