Ponds of the Canal

La Toja de Ribas pond / Gregorio Para

With the passage of time, a series of wetlands of high ecological value have formed along the banks of the Canal de Castilla, constituting an island of biodiversity in the monotonous landscape of Tierra de Campos.

The ecological value of these ponds lies in the diversity of their aquatic vegetation and the large number of vertebrate species that they hold.

The environmental value of the ponds has motivated the inclusion of these wetlands in the Natura 2000 Network. Most of them have been declared Special Protection Areas (SPA) and Sites of Community interest (SCI) and are listed in the Regional Catalogue of Wetland Areas. This strong protection status, however, has not sufficed to ensure their conservation and the ponds of Canal de Castilla presently have an unfavourable conservation status and some have disappeared.
